What is a Cataract?

A cataract happens when the lens in the eye starts to become cloudy, which results in vision impairment. In some cases, it can cause complete blindness if not detected early and treated correctly.

Unfortunately, cataracts are an unavoidable part of the aging process. They begin after the age of 40 because the proteins that make up the eye’s lens usually start to deteriorate and clump together. The cloudiness eventually worsens and blocks light from arriving at the retina.

Because cataracts progress relatively slowly, many people in the early stages are unaware they have the condition, making regular comprehensive eye exams essential.

Most patients experience rapid recovery with modern surgical techniques, returning to daily activities within a few days.

Improved Independence

Better vision means regaining the freedom to drive, read, enjoy hobbies, and participate in activities you love without relying on others for assistance.

Lower Risk of Complications

Effective cataract treatment can reduce the risk of further eye complications and improve your overall ocular health for years to come.

Recognizing Cataract Symptoms

Early detection is key to successful cataract management. Watch for these common warning signs:

  • Cloudy or blurry vision
  • Difficulty seeing at night
  • Increased sensitivity to light and glare
  • Seeing “halos” around lights
  • Fading or yellowing of colors
  • Double vision in one eye
  • Frequent changes in eyeglass prescription

The initial symptom of cataracts is typically increased foggy vision that isn’t corrected by your current glasses prescription. Many patients notice they require brighter lighting to read comfortably. Other symptoms include decreased night vision, unusual glare or halos around lights, and vision with a general yellowish tint.

Cataracts develop painlessly and are often present for a long time before causing noticeable symptoms. While they typically begin forming between ages 40–50, most patients don’t experience significant vision problems until their 60s.

What Causes Cataracts?

Cataracts result from the natural aging process and the inevitable breakdown of proteins within the eye’s lens. While this process affects everyone eventually, certain behavioral and health factors can accelerate cataract development. Behavioral choices, such as using tobacco products, drinking too much or too often, and heavy sun exposure, have been associated with cataracts, as have health conditions, including diabetes mellitus and high blood pressure. Other factors that can aggravate the condition include:

  • Genetics
  • Some medications, like steroids
  • Degenerative myopia
  • Certain kinds of eye surgery
  • Injury to the eye

Understanding these risk factors allows you to make informed choices about your eye health and seek early intervention when needed.

How Do I Know If I Have Cataracts?

Determining whether you have cataracts requires a comprehensive eye examination conducted by experienced specialists. At Ophthalmology Associates of the Valley, our award-winning team has decades of experience performing specialized diagnostic tests that are easy, relatively brief, and cause minimal discomfort.

Here’s what you can expect from a cataract evaluation:

Visual Acuity Test

Using a standard eye chart, we measure your baseline vision clarity.

Contrast Sensitivity Test

Similar to a vision test, this measures how easily you can distinguish contrast in images, which is an important indicator of cataract development.

Slit-Lamp Examination

Our specialists use a specialized microscope that directs a narrow beam of light into your eye, allowing detailed examination of the lens and other eye structures.

Dilated Retinal Exam

After administering eye drops to dilate your pupils, we examine the entire lens surface for signs of cataracts. Dilation is crucial for detecting cataracts in their earliest stages.

OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography)

If cataracts are detected, we may perform this advanced imaging test to evaluate the retinal layers and determine the most appropriate intraocular lens (IOL) for your needs.

Potential Acuity Meter (PAM) Test

This specialized test helps predict your vision potential after cataract removal, guiding treatment decisions.

How Are Cataracts Treated?

Once our ophthalmologists confirm a cataract diagnosis, we’ll discuss treatment options tailored to your specific condition. Treatment selection depends on the progression of your cataracts and how they’re affecting your daily life.

In the beginning stages, many patients achieve satisfactory vision with updated prescription lenses. Regular monitoring ensures we track any progression and adjust treatment accordingly.

Cataract Surgery

For cataracts that significantly impact vision and quality of life, surgical intervention becomes the most effective solution. Cataract surgery is a safe, outpatient procedure that typically takes less than 30 minutes to complete. During the procedure, your surgeon carefully removes the clouded natural lens and replaces it with a clear intraocular lens (IOL) that restores vision.

OAV offers both traditional cataract surgery and advanced femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS). In traditional surgery, your surgeon creates precise incisions and uses ultrasound technology (phacoemulsification) to gently break up and remove the cloudy lens. With FLACS, a computer-guided femtosecond laser performs key steps of the procedure with exceptional precision, offering enhanced accuracy in lens positioning and potentially faster recovery times.

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia with mild sedation, ensuring your comfort throughout. Most patients experience little to no discomfort and return home the same day.

Our experienced surgeons have performed thousands of successful cataract procedures, utilizing the latest technology and techniques to ensure optimal outcomes. We also offer a comprehensive range of intraocular lens options, including premium lenses that can correct astigmatism, provide multifocal vision, and significantly reduce dependence on glasses after surgery.

When Is the Right Time for Cataract Surgery?

The decision to proceed with cataract surgery is personal and depends on how much your cataracts interfere with daily activities. If you’re struggling with driving, reading, or enjoying hobbies due to vision problems, it may be time to consider surgery. Our team will work closely with you to determine the optimal timing for your procedure.

FAQs About Cataracts

After a thorough consultation at Ophthalmology Associates of the Valley, our team of skilled eye care professionals will effectively determine the best course of treatment for you. This decision depends upon the severity of your cataract, how it’s affecting your vision, and whether previous treatment methods have been tried.

If left untreated, cataracts will continue to worsen over time, progressively affecting your vision and potentially causing additional eye problems. Eventually, untreated cataracts can lead to severe vision impairment or blindness.

Following cataract surgery, most patients experience significant improvement within days, with full recovery taking approximately 4–6 weeks. Vision clarity typically stabilizes within 1–3 months. Our ophthalmologists will provide detailed aftercare instructions to ensure proper healing and optimal results.

Cataracts often develop slowly, making changes difficult to notice immediately. Early signs typically include cloudy or blurred vision, increased sensitivity to light and glare, seeing halos around lights, and frequent changes in eyeglass prescription. If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s crucial to schedule a comprehensive eye exam for proper diagnosis.

Currently, there is no proven method to reverse cataracts without surgical intervention. While some eye drops and alternative treatments claim to dissolve cataracts, these claims are not supported by scientific evidence. Surgery remains the most effective way to treat cataracts and restore clear vision.

While age is the most significant risk factor for developing cataracts, they are not exclusively age-related. Other factors such as diabetes, prolonged UV light exposure, certain medications, eye injuries, and genetics can also contribute to cataract formation. A comprehensive eye examination at OAV can help determine the underlying factors contributing to your cataracts.
